Portable Devices Pose Growing IT Security Threat
“I stopped just short of Super Glue,” said Gower, vice president of information systems at Martin, Fletcher, an Irving, Texas-based medical staffing firm. “For IT administrators, our job is not just setting up a computer for an employee to do their job. Our job is to safeguard the information of a company and make it accessible to those who need it
I have heard this for quite some time now, and like anything new it is usually the third time around that it sticks. Heck back in my corporate days at Network Associates (currently McAfee, less a few business units) we had anti virus for mobile devices over 5 years ago…needless to say not much of that product moved. People were not ready for it and mobile devices, though in existence, where nowhere near as powerful a devise as they are now. Now with Wi-Fi a mobile device is an extension of the internet. With massive storage that can fit in the palm of your hand, they are capable of massive amounts of corporate theft.
“So what am I to do?” I ususally hear from customers and the answer is different for each one depending on a few key items:
- What security do you have now?
- How important is the data you want to protect OR How much SUPER IMPORTANT data do you have to protect?
- What is your internal IT skillset pool?
- How much time do you have to evaluate, learn and maintain better security?
- What is your back-up strategy?
- How much budget do you have to resolve these issues?
- How well are employees educated?
The answers to these lead us down the primrose path and options begin to fall into place based upon actual qualified needs. It is simple, but not easy.
